Our History

Established in 1978, SMM Instruments started in the analytical and clinical industries market by supplying high-end technological solutions.

By 2014, SMM was purchased by Chemetrix Pty Ltd where it focused on supplying industrial analytical products to the market.

2019 was a landmark year for SMM Instruments, as there was a management buyout by key executives and investors with a passion for SMM Instruments and industry they work in. SMM Instruments has become a company driven by loyalty, commitment and passion.

SMM Instruments is a sole distributor of Leica Biosystems and are a loyal partner of theirs.

  • SMM employees are required to meet and complete Anti-Corruption Training annually.

  • This is a key component of our Channel Partner Compliance Program and ensures that both parties are in compliance with international anti-corruption laws and your home countries national anti-bribery laws.

Greg Mons (Managing Director & Shareholder):

 

A Graduate of Cambridge Open University (UK) - FICMA, HDIP-CA Honours Wits, HDIP Taxation Wits, COQ Assurance Diploma - Florida USA – Started a career in finance with Johnson Matthey PLC – relocating to UK, FM – Johnson Matthey Europe returning to South Africa as Project Director on Auto Catalytic Conversion Plant build in SA.  Moved onto Financial / Administration Manager Afrox/BOC manufacturing plants Gas and Welding Equipment / Products. CFO - Powertech Batteries (Altron Group), CFO Prime Serve, owner/director Renewable Energy, MD/FD SMM Instruments.

John Andrews (Director & Shareholder):

 

Co-owner/ Managing Director. Eric Andrews Sports ( Pty ) Ltd  ( 1986-1996) a specialist sporting good importer and distributor. Retail distribution chain.

 

Listed on JSE first BEE Company in 1996. Mathomo Group Ltd in conjunction with The National Union of Mineworkers NUM. ( 1996-2000 ) Main Board Director responsible for Retail Division (120 Stores) and establishment of Financial Services Company for NUM membership base.

 

Co-owner/ Joint Managing Director. Andrews Kit ( Pty ) Ltd t/a Contract Kitting ( 2000- 2011 )  A vertically integrated company providing the

“back bone “infrastructure to the telecommunications industry. The scope of activities included the design, importation, manufacture and assembly of cellular base stations for MTN, Cell C, Vodacom.

Company acquired by Convergnet Ltd. 2010.

Mark Saunders (Director & Shareholder):

 

Graduate of Wits Technikon – Higher National Diploma in Electronics.

Service Engineer – SMM Instruments (1980 to 1983)

Sales representative – SMM Instruments (1984 to 1985)

Sales Manager – SMM Instruments (1985 to 1997)

Divisional Director - SMM Instruments (1997 to 2005)

Board Director – Set Point Technologies (1998 to 2005)

Owner/Manager – SMM Instruments (2005 to 2015)

Owner/Manager – Quest Scientific (2015 to present)

Board Director – SMM Instruments (2019 to present)

 

Dr Robert Smith:

 

A Graduate from the University of Sunderland (UK) in Pharmacology (BSc Hons); Bath University (PhD Pharmacology); University of Cape Town (PGDip International Research Ethics) and Stellenbosch University (PGDip Business Management and Administration) – Started in Research, post-doctoral fellow at The University of Cape Town, Deputy Director of the Hatter Institute for Cardiology Research.  Moved to Stellenbosch University (Physiological Sciences) as an academic.  Established the Imaging Unit (part of the Central Analytical Facility).  Joined SMM Instruments to support diagnostics portfolio and imaging. 

 

Jan Kaljee:

 

A Graduate from the University of the Free State with an Honours degree in Genetics. Completed an internship in Molecular Biology through the NHLS at the Somatic Cell Genetics department at Charlotte Maxekke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and was accordingly registered with the HPCSA as a molecular scientist. Joined various reputable companies until joining SMM Instruments in February 2015. Completed a diploma in Project Management and sales management through UCT.
